Real Estate of the Palm Springs Mid-Century Masters
Mid-century moderns seem to simultaneously stand in both defiance and harmony with their environment. Beautiful in their geometric simplicity, they stand like gems scattered throughout the desert landscape of California.
These gems are priceless air looms of a bygone era. Joseph Eichler, the champion of the mid-century modern, was able to build nearly 11,000 examples of these iconic homes. The Eichler name is now synonymous with a style of architecture not so different from the Frank Lloyd Wrights and the Richard Neutras, despite Eichler not being an architect so much as an evangelist for the modernist cause. Sometimes, it is the messengers that become famous.
George and Robert Alexander were other such messengers similar to Eichler. A two man father and son team, they had a experienced success in the L.A. markets and had an open mind to new technique. While not quite as prolific as Eichler, they still managed to churn out over 2,500 mid-century style homes in their time. Known as a democratizer, the Alexander’s made modern homes affordable for the mid to low priced markets. The Alexander homes, like many other mid-century style homes, stood for the bold turn that Palm Springs would come to be known for in architecture circuits.
Mid-century homes grew out of the Bauhaus movement in Germany. Bauhaus, the progenitor of functional modern styling similar to that of Ikea, extols the virtues of clean geometric styling. It is fully responsible for nearly all modern concepts of style from the all-glass facades of modern skyscrapers to the visually elegant Apple Computer.
