Using The Elements of Good Design in your Palm Springs Home

Does your Palm Springs home have the elements of good design? Whether you are preparing your Palm Springs home for sale, hoping to attract more buyers, or simply looking to create a new sense of Zen in your Mid-Century Modern, Traditional or Adobe-Chic abode … how can you ensure your Palm Springs home will always be in vogue?

Regardless of the latest trend or avant garde Palm Springs designer, “there are core principles of all good interior design that are timeless”, says Attila Lawrence, head of the interior architecture program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Mariwyn Evans, author of Four Fundamentals Give any Room a Sense of Style says “Keep these three basic design principles, plus functionality, in mind as you begin the process on your Palm Springs home, and you will be able to increase its appeal and help buyers look past shag carpeting and poor furniture layout to see a room’s potential.”

1. Balance in your Palm Springs home

Balance is achieved by using furniture and other objects to create visual equality, so that one area complements the other. The two most common ways to accomplish this in your Palm Springs home are through symmetry and asymmetry. Symmetry is defined as beauty as a result of balance or harmonious arrangement. In design this means one side of the room mirroring the other. This type of balance is traditionally formal and may not appeal to everyone, hence the alternative, asymmetry.

A more unique way to create balance in your Palm Springs home is through asymmetrical design, using one large piece of furniture in conjunction with several smaller furniture pieces or objects. “You want to achieve a visual symphony in which every ‘note’ is appropriate to the function of a room and nothing is distracting; it’s like a great musical composition,” says Lawrence.

2. Creating Harmony in your Palm Springs Home

Like musical notes, harmony in a room occurs when all parts of the -arrangement, from furniture to accessories to wall color, come together in your Palm Springs home to create a beautiful visual song, pleasing to the eye. Repetition in color, texture, or shape is an easy way to achieve harmony in your Palm Springs home. Echoing colors used in accent pillows, chairs, window treatments, etc. will bring the room together, creating a pleasing visual harmony. Be careful not to go overboard, creating a room with all stripes, too much blue or dark wood. Duplications and too much repetition can make a room boring or overwhelming depending on objects or colors used. Changing color intensities for example, from a chocolate brown to a lighter taupe, and textures is acceptable and enhances the harmony in your unique Palm Springs home.

“An orchestration of related elements helps us comprehend and connect objects in relation to the space. Without that connection, the space seems to lack a sense of unity,” says Lawrence.

3. Using Emphasis in your Palm Springs Home

Every well-designed room in your Palm Springs home needs a focal point — a fireplace, a terrific view framed by a compelling window treatment, or a powerful painting — to draw the eye into the space. Large spaces may need several points of emphasis.

“It’s the contrast between what is emphasized and what is not that creates interest in a space. Without a focal point, there’s no place for the eye to rest and the interior seems uninteresting,” says Lawrence. “With a focal point, you can immediately respond to the aesthetics of an interior space.”

4. Functionality in a Palm Springs Home

In every Palm Springs home, the adage “form follows function” (made famous by master architect Louis Sullivan) should be the golden rule. A room where children will play and the family will gather needs furniture with durable fabric, a layout with space for blocks or homework, and relaxed furniture styles to fit the room’s many functions.

“Everything in a given space should be appropriate to and support the experience of what will take place there,” says Lawrence.

Creating balance and unity, along with a focal point and functionality, will increase the value of your Palm Springs home in the eyes of a buyer and perhaps, enhance the joy you feel while being at home.
