In a big win for commerce and real estate in the Palm Springs area the city's Architectural Review Commission passed a vote on the expansion of the Westfield Palm Desert according to an article in the Desert Sun. The commission unanimously approved the conceptual drawings for the renovation that will add just under 400,000 square-feet of retail space to the million-square-foot mall in time for the opening of Nordstrom in 2011. The renovation will create not only construction jobs in the near term, but will update the mall and allow many more shops upon completion.
Besides the addition of Nordstrom as an anchor, the renovation will add space for a second high-end luxury department store, along with a third-level complex with movie theaters and restaurants. The project got high marks from the commission at a preview meeting Nov. 12, but Tuesday, details such as parking and shade structures came in for a more careful critique.
"These are going to be building-size structures facing the street," Commissioner Kristi Hanson said, referring to the revamped parking garages. "The architecture needs to be more substantial than typical parking structures. It sets the tone." This shows the commission is considering fashion along with function on the mall renovation. This is critical for Palm Springs area real estate values both residential and commercial.
